Pakenham Water Mill Workshops

Following the success of last year’s workshops, there will be a series of ten workshops this year, covering a range of interesting and stimulating topics, all taking place in the beauitful and historic surroundings of Pakenham Water Mill.

Willow Plant Support Making

Thursday April 26th 10am to 1pm

Spend an enjoyable morning at the Mill, under the experienced eye of our tutor, Jonathan Mosley Williams, learning how to make these practical items for use in your garden later in the season.

Print Making

Tuesday May 8th 10am to 3.30pm

This new workshop will introduce you to several simple methods of producing your own prints with examples of work on hand to guide and encourage you.

All inks will be supplied but members will need to bring along scissors, vinyl gloves, overalls etc. A full list will be supplied.

The workshop will be led by printmaker and teacher Jeanie Kemp.

Rag Rug Making

Wednesday May 30th 10am to 3.30pm

Recycle your T shirts and woollen garments into a rug, cushion or another decorative item. This workshop is for beginners but also welcomes those with some experience. Materials and tools will be available to purchase, but start saving those T shirts and woollies now.

Bread Making

Tuesday June 12th 10am to 3.30pm

This is a simple one-day course for those who want to try making bread by hand in the traditional way.  We will learn about different sorts of flour, fresh and dried yeast, or no yeast at all and we’ll take the mystery out of ‘kneading’, ‘proving’ and ‘knocking back’  All the loaves will be baked in the mill’s eighteenth-century brick oven.

Felt Making

Wednesday June 20th 10am to 3.30pm

Come and join us to make a unique fashion accessory – a beautiful felt scarf.  A treat for yourself or to give as a special present. This session is perfect for those who are discovering felting for the first time. Equally, it is ideal for those who joined us last time and who may now wish to expand and develop their expertise! Demonstrations will help you to decide your own design and help will be on hand from 2 experienced felters as you produce your own creation.

Stitch Workshop

Tuesday June 26th 10am to 3.30pm

Learn a Patchwork technique, incorporate other crafts – e.g. Embroidery, Appliqué and Quilting to make a cushion cover. You will have ample opportunity to discuss your ideas and be inspired by samples and demonstrations throughout the day. This workshop, which will be led by experienced stitchers, Ann Aket and Mary Shepherd, is particularly suitable for beginners but all welcome to enrol.

An Introduction to Creative Photography

Wednesday July 4th 10am to 3.30pm
This workshop is aimed at those of you new to photography or those with some experience wishing to get more out of your photography. The workshop will cover basic camera controls, more advanced settings, composition and will include practical sessions with your own camera.

Painting and Sketching

Wednesday July 11th 10am to 3.30pm

Enjoy a day in the beautiful surroundings of the Water Mill, developing your artistic skills under the guidance of local artist David Morley. The format for the day will definitely be ‘hands on’, with opportunities to paint/draw inside the Mill and around the mill pond. David will use his own experiences of painting the Mill to help you on your way. Beginners very welcome.

An introduction to the Skills of the Miller

Wednesday July 11th 10am to 3.30pm

Workshop members will spend the day with Peter Stobbart, our Head Miller, learning about the skilled art of milling. The day will progress from learning about the source and types of wheat right through to the production of stoneground flour. It will be a ‘hands on’ experience with an opportunity to take a bag of your own flour home at the end of the day. Old, clean clothes will be a necessity

Corn Dolly Making

Thursday September 6th 10am to 1pm

Harvest is the perfect time of the year to learn about the traditional skill of Corn Dolly making. Using locally sourced wheat in the peaceful surroundings of the Mill, you will be guided by the experience of our tutor, Valerie Stobbart. As well as making your own corn dollies you will have an opportunity to learn something of the history and traditions of this ancient craft.
