In celebration of National Mills Weekend and the visit by The Hairy Bikers to Pakenham Water Mill in 2009, the volunteers at the mill are recreating the ‘Mother Knows Best’ idea for their annual Food Event. All members of the public are invited to bring along a sample of their favourite recipe for everyone else to try, together with a written copy of the recipe. Folks will then be able to write down the recipe of any dish that takes their fancy.

The event will run from 11am to 5pm on Sunday 9 May coinciding with National Mills Weekend; a national event when water and wind mills throughout the country are open to the public. During the day other quality food producers will also be in attendance offering their products from fresh meat and cakes to real ale.

It promises to be an excellent day out for all the family to enjoy; the water mill will be working and milling wheat, the 1904 Oil Engine will also be in operation together with bread being baked in the 18th century bread oven. Visitors can enjoy refreshments by the mill pond and bread made with mill flour will be on sale.

A special bus will run from The Tourist Information Centre in Bury St Edmunds on the day or follow the brown signs to the Water Mill from the A143 to Diss road.

A local Scouts group at Ixworth have been involved in helping out at the Mill by making bat boxes for us which have been put up in some of the mature trees. With the aid of bat detectors and torches in the summer evenings, we have found at least three species of bat, including Noctule and Pipistrelle roosting and feeding in the areas of the outbuildings and brown long eared bats in the mill itself. The Ixworth Scouts will be coming again soon to help us clear the debris from recently coppiced trees and shrubs and hopefully put up some bird boxes and create a rustic seating area.

Traditional fen eel traps, wood turning on a pole lathe and coracle making are some of the unusual and fascinating old crafts being demonstrated at Pakenham Water Mill in a special event on Sunday 12 September. Visitors will also be able to see flour being milled in the traditional way using millstones driven by the mill’s huge iron water wheel. There will be demonstrations of baking in the old brick bread oven and the 100 year-old Blackstone oil engine will be running. All this in a beautiful setting beside the millpond, where you can sit and enjoy a BBQ lunch or tea and cakes with a brass band playing in the background.

Sunday 20 June 2010 - 11.00am to 5.00pm

A 100 year-old Blackstone oil engine will be one of the star attractions at Pakenham Water Mill’s annual Vintage Power Day on Sunday June 20. Built in 1904 by the famous Blackstone Engine Company of Stamford in Lincolnshire, it was installed at the water mill in 1930 to drive a roller mill for producing white flour. After many years of neglect it has been restored by Chris Irwin and Jim Clarke, two of the volunteers at the mill, and visitors can see and hear it running on this special open day. Enthusiasts from all over Suffolk will also be there to demonstrate a range of smaller stationary engines and there will be a spectacular display of vintage cars.

As usual at this popular event the mill will be working and visitors can see fine wholemeal flour being ground in the traditional way or watch a demonstration of baking in the old brick bread oven. The tearoom will be open for light refreshments and the mill shop will be selling ice-creams, gifts and of course the mill’s own flour. A special treat is the freshly baked bread made by Viv Sutcliffe also on sale in the shop – but get there early because it goes very quickly!
